small profile!
The goal is to produce a health-related social advertisement. Students had to create both poster ads and audio clips concerning some problem that affects the health or life expectancy of Estonians. The first task was to come up with a slogan which would serve as the core for both the poster and the audio clip. Students could freely choose the design for their posters. They could use any materials captured on their own (e.g. topical images for anti-smoking and -drinking ads). For the radio ad, students had to gather factual information or statistics (e.g. how smoking affects the organism; what is the proportion of deaths due to an open safety belt in traffic-related deaths etc.) and use it in the text. Students used their own smart devices to record spoken text. We are planning to use the finished works during the health week – posters will be displayed around the schoolhouse and audio clips will be played on the school radio. The results were great and students enjoyed this approach a lot. From my perspective, supervising the process was somewhat problematic. Students did not know how or were not able to schedule their work and did not start with it on time (thus, the works are completed in the last minute, sometimes at the expense of sleeping hours). Given that the works were produced in the form of an independent out-of-class activity, it came as a positive surprise that everyone succeeded in designing their posters on a computer.
