Task-based learning
Objective of the lesson is to integrate the 7th grade science class topic of mechanical work and energy with practical activities, history, mathematics, art and technology.
How to build a marshmallow catapult? What is STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics)?
What is expected of STEM education?
Understanding of science and technology, engineering skills and mathematical thinking.
How to find ideas? www.stem.org.uk/
1. Students discuss the historical background – what were catapults used for, what is the purpose of a catapult and, accordingly, how should one be built. Keywords are marked down on a joint concept map using e.g. padlet.com/
2. Students form groups of 3-4. They start out with some materials for experimenting – 7 grill matches, two large marshmallows, rubber bands (bigger and smaller), scissors, glue, plasticine, tape, drinking cup, wire, colored paper.
The task is to build a catapult within 10 minutes, using insights from the earlier discussion plus all the available materials and to test it – i.e. demonstrate to everyone, whether and how far the marshmallow is thrown.
3. Then, students watch a video manual for building a catapult (www.youtube.com/w...)
4. Each group has to build a catapult according to the manual + decorate it!
5. Groups have to come up with a task and forward it to the next group, while also solving a task that has been forwarded to them.
6. With older students (gymnasium), the throws could be recorded and trajectories later worked on in the physlets.org/trac... environment. There it becomes possible to pose quantitative questions.
7. In the end of the lesson, the method, task and possible solutions will be summarized.
8. The teacher wraps up the lesson with a questionnaire created in the www.quizizz.com environment.
