small profile!
10th grade Medieval-themed project, which consists of researching a topic and organizing a field trip to the Old Town of Tallinn. Participating teachers: literature teacher, history teacher. The present scenario describes the literature part of the project which took place 1,5 months before the history part due to cyclical learning in our school. For this reason, the scenario can be classified as inquiry-based learning. The research part was observed by two teachers: the permanent literature teacher and a trainee. The task of the trainee was to provide feedback and give a final assessment of the inquiry that was performed. Guidelines for group work with Melchior books Choose a topic for your group by reaching a consensus. Explicate the topic and agree on the division of labor within the group. One task can be handled by several persons. Open up Google Docs, invite the group members. Add both teachers to the members so they are able to observe your progress. Your work will also be forwarded to the history teacher. Topics 1. A tourist map inspired by the book – exact locations need to be illustrated with quotes 2. Witnessing a murder: a step-by-step description of a murder investigation, including misleading hints 3. A genealogy with hints to the contents of the book; connections with sagas/heroic epics 4. Defining the concept of 'hero'; portraying a hero according to medieval genre rules 5. Elements of magic and mystery in the book; connections with mythology 6. Portray of a detective (character traits, appearance, social status); comparison between Melchior and another famous detective (or other famous detectives) in literature 7. A compilation of quotes – one should find the most important ones, associate them with a correct context and group them thematically. 8. Features of a Medieval novel – e.g. elements of chivalric romance, ideas from Reynard fables, classification of characters based on Dante's "Inferno" Duration: 5 lessons (225 minutes); in addition, 2 hours of independent work outside the classroom. For this scenario, I have tried to reflect the work of all five lessons. I have added the average time spent on reading the literary work which for this particular class was 225 minutes. Number of students: 38 The grade is formed based on the following points: 1. Ability to orientate in the book, i.e., the book has been thoroughly read. 2. Making connections between the work and the knowledge acquired in literature class. 3. Skilled use of examples and quotes. 4. Analytical skills 5. The skill of setting goals for the work and intelligibility of the structure 6. Group work skills, i.e. each member has contributed equally The materials should be improved upon in the history class 1,5 months later and used in some extent when conducting the field trip to the Old Town.
